Hoa sen (tên khoa học là Nelumbo Nucifera) là loại hoa mọc lên từ rễ củ nằm dưới lớp bùn đất ở dưới nước, hoa thường có màu trắng, hồng, có khi phơn phớt vàng, xanh, tím... Hoa nở vươn khỏi mặt nước, lộ bày đài hoa, nhụy và hạt. Hoa đẹp hương thơm tinh khiết, nên được mọi người ưa chuộng. Ấn Độ giáo có truyền thuyết cho rằng lúc khởi đầu vũ trụ một hoa sen mọc lên từ rốn của thần Vishnu, giữa hoa có Phạm thiên ngói kiết già. Hoa sen lại là một trong tám biểu tượng của Phật giáo, khó có thể kể hết kinh sách Phật giáo nói về hoa sen, sau đây chỉ là phần khái lược. Truyền thuyết kể rằng khi Đức Thích-ca đản sinh, Ngài đi bảy bước và có bảy hoa sen đỡ bàn chân Ngài. Chư Phật, Bồ-tát thường được miêu tả ngồi hay đứng trên đài sen tay cầm hoa sen. Kinh Diệu Pháp Liên Hoa lấy hoa sen làm đề kinh. Các tu viện, chùa chiền, hội đoàn Phật giáo thường trang trí hoặc lấy hoa sen làm biểu tượng. Sở dĩ như thế vì hoa sen đẹp tinh khiết, có hương thơm không nhiễm bùn bên trong hoa có đàn có hạt.....
